Terry R. Rakes is the William C. and Alix C. Houchens Professor of Information Technology, Department of Business Information Technology, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He received the Ph.D. in Management Science, M.B.A., and B.S.I.E. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is a co-author of the book Management Science: An Introduction. He has published numerous research papers at conferences and articles in journals including Management Science, Decision Sciences, Annals of Operations Research, Operations Research Letters, Computers and Operations Research, Information and Management, OMEGA: The International Journal of Management Science, International Journal of Production Research, Simulation, Journal of Information Science, and others. Dr. Rakes' research and teaching interests are in information technology, including networking and data communications, artificial intelligence and expert systems, decision support systems, and the application of management science decision methodologies to problems in information systems. He was a 1992 recipient of the University W.E. Wine Award for Excellence in Teaching, and is Past-Chair of the Virginia Tech Academy of Teaching Excellence. He has also received six other teaching awards at the college or university level. He has been active in professional organizations, having served as President of the Decision Sciences Institute, Editor of DSI's news publication Decision Line, and in numerous other positions. In 1994, he received DSI's Distinguished Service Award, and in 1996 he was named a Fellow. He is a Past President of the Southeast Region of the Decision Sciences Institute and of the Southeastern Chapter of INFORMS, and has received Distinguished Service Awards from both organizations. He is currently a member of the Decision Sciences Institute, INFORMS, and the Association for Information Systems.
