Biography

Dr. Barbara Fraticelli joined the BIT Department in August 2017 and was promoted to Associate Professor of Practice in August 2022.  Previously, she served as an Instructor in the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Dr. Fraticelli received a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech in 2001, while earning 1st place in the national IIE Pritsker Dissertation Competition. She obtained both a B.S. in Industrial Engineering (1995) and an M.S. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (1997) from Penn State.  Barbara's research and teaching interests focus on all areas of operations research, including optimization, probability and statistics, analytics, and supply chain management.  She has taught classes for sophomores through graduate students, as well as executive seminars on analytics.

Since joining the BIT Department, Dr. Fraticelli has been awarded the Pamplin College of Business Certificate of Teaching Excellence (2018) and the University Certificate of Teaching Excellence (2018), as well as the BIT Department Outstanding Teaching Award (2018, 2020).  Since August 2017, she has also served as the faculty advisor for the Virginia Tech Student Forum of ASCM, the Association for Supply Chain Management. Dr. Fraticelli also serves as the Director of the Pamplin Engage Undergraduate TA Program, where she trains and supervises over 200 undergraduate students who serve as teaching assistants for Pamplin courses.
