Biography
Onur Seref is an Associate Professor of Business Information Technology in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He received his Ph.D. in Operations Research from the University of Florida and an M.S. and B.S. in Industrial Engineering from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. Dr. Seref’s primary research interests involve developing novel methods for machine learning, artificial intelligence, and visualization with applications in natural language processing and understanding, text mining, analytics, and visualization, combinatorial and nonlinear optimization methods in data mining and network optimization theory with applications in biomedicine. Dr. Seref is an editor of the Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence journal. His research has been published in Operations Research, INFORMS Journal of Computing, INFORMS Journal of Data Science, Annals of Operations Research, Pattern Recognition, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology, and IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering among other prominent journals. He has served as the chair of the INFORMS Data Mining Society, a member of the Franz Edelman Award committee, and he is actively involved in the INFORMS community.
