Program at a Glance
The Cybersecurity Management and Analytics (CMA) program in Northern Virginia is based in Virginia Tech’s Business Information Technology (BIT) department, under the Pamplin College of Business. The program offers a Bachelor of Science in Business[KW1] degree with a Cybersecurity Management and Analytics (CMA) major.
Program faculty are nationally and internationally recognized experts who bring first-hand industry and research experience to the classroom. The CMA program in Northern Virginia was the first Virginia Tech undergraduate degree available in the greater Washington, D.C., area Northern Virginia.
Students in the CMA program in Northern Virginia can obtain a Virginia Tech degree while remaining in the D.C. area after transferring from a Virginia community college with an associate degree in Business Administration or Information Technology. CMA courses will be taught at Virginia Tech’s Northern Virginia Center campus for Fall 2024, but then will move to the Innovation Campus starting in Spring 2025. Classes in the program are a mix of hybrid classes and online classes.
- Hybrid classes are at least 50% in person, with the in-person portion taking place at Virginia Tech’s Academic Building One in Alexandria, Virginia. Up to 50% of other portion of the class will be virtual.
- Online classes are synchronous and asynchronous.
- Classes are offered on various days of the week and at various times. See the VT Timetable of Classes and use the Campus drop down menu to select “National Capitol Region” and the Term drop down menu to select the associated semester and year.
A critical part of this degree is the practical experience students gain from a required Field Study internship and accompanying BIT 4964 Field Study course. Visit this Field Study page to learn more about this requirement.

Application Process
To be considered for the CMA program in Northern Virginia, it is recommended that students complete (or be close to completing) an associate degree from a Virginia community college in Business Administration or Information Technology.
If you are planning to transfer to the CMA program in Northern Virginia from another institution or hope to earn a second bachelor’s degree through this CMA program, contact the CMA program in Northern Virginia as soon as possible at bitcyber@vt.edu.
Students must choose the CMA major in their transfer application and will not be allowed to change their major or attend on-campus courses in Blacksburg without department approval.

Complete applications are eligible to request an application fee waiver by 11:59 p.m. on the Priority Deadline.*
