BIT-Cyber FAQs

Yes. The degree includes the exact same curriculum as the Cybersecurity Management and Analytics (CMA) degree at our Blacksburg campus. However, BIT-Cyber courses are offered in virtual format or at the Northern Virigina Center in Falls Church (for Fall 2024) or Innovation Campus in Alexandria (starting in Spring 2025). BIT-Cyber graduates receive the same diploma as our on-campus CMA graduates and are considered a Hokie just like any other student who attends Virginia Tech.

Courses for the BIT-Cyber program are primarily offered as virtual (both synchronously and asynchronously), which allows interaction and collaboration between BIT-Cyber students and on-campus students in Blacksburg. As the BIT-Cyber program continues to grow, we will have more in-person instruction at the Northern Virginia Center in Falls Church (for Fall 2024) or the Innovation Campus in Alexandria (starting in Spring 2025).

No. The BIT-Cyber program is open to transfer students from any state, community college, and major. However, based on Guaranteed Admissions Agreements, these two VCCS degrees provide many of the foundational classes required for our 4-year degree in BIT-Cyber. Students pursuing other majors are eligible to apply, but you will likely be required to complete additional courses to satisfy the bachelor’s degree requirements. (You must earn a C or higher in a course for it to be eligible for transfer credit.) Please coordinate with your VCCS or university Academic Advisor to review your goals with the most up-to-date BIT-Cyber CMA checksheet. For additional questions, you may contact the program team at bitcyber@vt.edu.

No, but we highly recommend completing coursework towards a Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Associate degree in Business Administration or Information Technology.  Completing and transferring coursework only from a VCCS degree allows VT to give credit for some required Pathways courses, thereby accelerating your degree progress.  No more than 63 credit hours may transfer from community college coursework.

Yes, but transfers from college/universities outside of Virginia will experience a longer degree progress timeline and more coursework to earn our 4-year degree in BIT-Cyber.

No. The BIT-Cyber program is open to current students and graduates of all community colleges and other institutions. However, having completed coursework in the VCCS Business Administration or Information Technology Associate degree will be very advantageous.

No. The decision point to attend on-campus or the BIT-Cyber program in Northern Virginia is made during the initial application process.  The BIT-Cyber Northern Virginia campus degree program provides advantages of schedule flexibility and cost savings. Once in the program, students will complete all courses from Northern Virginia. Students are still eligible to attend on-campus events in Blacksburg (Career Fairs, Sporting events, Commencement).

See the Field Study website, which includes information for students and companies interested in completing and supporting the required Field Study.
